Running the Pi OS on a old desktop or laptop?
« on: January 11, 2021, 03:19:01 PM »

No this isn't possible but if your old PC or laptop is bootable from a USB stick then there is this:
Linux comes in several flavors and the Pi uses a version of Debian OS (Raspberry OS). I've found another version of Debian (Raspberry Pi Desktop). Despite its name it will not work on a Pi but was created for PC and mac desktops or laptops. This loads up to a Pi looking desktop so it runs simular to a pi even the terminal window apears as if it were on a pi thus it looks and feels like the  RaspBerry OS
Since you don't have Raspi hardware your limited to what you can do to software only Pi things.
So where do you find this RaspberryPi Desktop and install instuctions?
https://projects.raspberrypi.org/en/projects/install-raspberry-pi-desktop
To setup the PiX10Hub programs(HomeGenie and or HA-Bridge) download the attached zip file to "Raspberry Pi Desktop" and Unzip the file. Once unzipped you can open the folder PiX10Hub_setupfiles and open the READ.ME file.
I recommend double clicking on the installers and choose execute in terminal as this way you know when the install has finished and if there are any errors reported.
Note: these only work for the  "Raspberry Pi Desktop " on a PC or Mac the installers are slightly different for a Raspi.

I'm currently having issues with the HA-Bridge jar file being able to start on this Linux Build  :-[
For some reason it doesn't wish to execute. The build comes with open Java 11 which appears needs to be installed. I'll still keep plugging away at this and keep the thread and installer updated when I get it sorted out.

I now have HA-Bridge running on the Raspberry Pi Desktop.
There were a number of issues:
1: Although the OS does have a couple of Java programing tools installed neither would run the ha-Bridge.jar file
2: openjava had to be installed however it installed open java 11 and no option to install openjava 8.
3: the ha-bridge.jar file in the setup was Version 8 so the script needed to download the correct build
4: the service file I had created was incomplete and had a typo ::) :`)
Note: The OP has been updated to include the fixed installer files
