Are Alex10 days numbered?
« on: January 28, 2018, 06:58:49 PM »

With the release of the WM100 and the X10 WIFI app Alex10's life could be short lived.
Once a skill is created for this device I know I'll most likely stop using Alex10.
So when will that happen?
Although I enjoy working on Alex10 I really only run it for debugging.
I most likely will not stop using the HA-Bridge as I've integrated it for use with PCC and I can't see me giving up on it just yet. Although I feel the time is closing on it as well. :(

When the Alexa skill is available for the WM100 that'll be my trigger to buy one.  Alex10 is terrific  (Chr) but the WM100 will replace the CM15a, Alex10 and the HA Bridge and (hopefully) make things simple enough that maybe X10 can get a new foothold in the market that it originally created.  I hope the Alexa skill is a priority with them as virtually every HA hub has it included now.

I've stopped using Alex10 infact all PC X10 software. The Ha-Bridge I still use  for Broadlink control of my X10 security console but this is run on a RPi with HomeGenie.
BWSsystems does continue to actively work on the HA-Bridge adding new helpers and options. Although Homegenie does control most of my HA even with Alexa and Google the HA-Bridge will remain in use here.

I've replaced Alex10 with the PiAlexaHub in one home and recently replaced a PiAlexaHub with a Smartenit Harmony G2 in the other.  I found the G2 at a super low price on Amazon and wanted to see how it worked.  Basically it does everything the WM100 was supposed to do - and more - with support for Insteon and ZigBee built in.  It has a good smartphone app as well as a web app.  They also have the Harmony P2 which does the same thing with a smaller processor for less money. For the P2 it appears that they bought a bunch of PogoPlay devices (defunct company) and installed their own software.  I'm happy with both the PiAlaexa Hub and the G2.

I still use and love the Alex10, but I am a basic jones person.. I run it on a windows machine.. and it does what I need (Sans Alexa's odd mood to sometimes "<unit> is not responding"..  :)
