Replacement for Powerlinc 1132B with WGL V572A
« on: June 05, 2016, 09:50:49 AM »

I believe my 1132B is failing. It along with the V572A has provided reliable RF X10 performance up to now. What is available to replace the 1132B or this combo to get my RF performance back?

Thanks!

The 1132B could be used in place of the X10 TW523 or X10Pro PSC05.
Both are now discontinued as is the 1132B.
Jeff at JV Digital Engineering has made an enhanced replacement for the TW523 or PSC05.
That is better than the originals.
http://jvde.us/xtb-523.htm

WGL now is recommending the XTB-523 for the V572A.
One thing my fuzzy memory recalls. The Interface cable used by the 1132B versus the PSC05/Tw523 maybe wired differently and a interface cable may also be needed with a V572A when replacing an 1132B. Unless you stored the cable included in the V572A kit. If you bought it as a complete kit. If you bought it from Smarthome {like I did}. You didn't get a TW523/PSC05 you got an 1132B in the kit.

Brian,
Thanks for the help. I found the order for my setup and it was the Smarthome kit. I will have to email wgl to see if the cable between the V572A and XTB-523 is different than that for the 1132B.

I found the instruction sheet for my Smarthome 1132B/V572A Kit.
It used the custom RJ45 8 pin to RJ14 1132B interface cable.
It supplied power to the V572A so the external power supply was not needed.
I vaguely remember the V572A in the kit was slightly modified by WGL to use the 12 volts supplied by the 1132B
The XTB-532 has a RJ14 six pin connector and no power on the I/O connections.
So you will probably need an external power supply and a different data cable between the V572A and the XTB-523.

Since you are going to be contacting WGL they should be able to get you all the needed information.

I contacted Jeff Volp. The data cable is simply a RJ12 "flipped " phone cable for the XBT-523. I am waiting to hear from WGL. Their site recommends the XBT also.

That sounds like a standard phone to wall jack cable.
I tested my V572A from the Smarthome Kit with a TW523 and standard phone cable. It worked fine.
I did have a special Data Type that was needed to use the V572A with a 1132B if you did not want to use the special one in the 1132B kit and external power supply.

WGL reports I can use an external 9vdc supply via the power jack.  It needs a 3.5mm mono phone plug with the tip positive.  Current requirements are less than 50ma. I will check my junk box to see if I have something close. Thanks for the help.

You are welcome.
I opened mine and there was also power connections on pins 1 and 6 of the interface for use by the 1132B.
Both the 3.5mm jacks + DC tip and the interface jacks DC + was isolated by a diode.
The  9vdc may not be to fussy if higher. The 1132B has a 12 volt supply and the V572A has a small 5 volt regulator IC. Feed by either the 3.5mm jack or the interface jack 1 and 6.
I believe the 9vdc maybe the minimum input that the IC is guaranteed to work with.

If you don't already have a repeater - your failing 1132B might have created an opportunity to kill "two-stones-with-a-bird" (Dyslexia intentional).  The XTB IIR repeater has a TW523 port built-in.  My V572A is plugged into my repeater.  My V572 did come with its own power supply.  The XTB IIR is one kick-a** repeater, which will make your X10 system really solid.  It costs a bit more - but if your in a buying mood anyway......

Brian-Thanks again for all the help. I found a walwart that puts out about 9.5v at 60 ma. load. Sounds like that should work.

Josam-Thanks for the suggestion. I will check it out.

That one should work.
The one I got in  W800RF32 , PF8 and V572A kits. Where all a 9vdc 100mA. Measures 10.5vdc with no load. Looks like WGL basically uses the same supply in all their kits.

If you have your V572A  anywhere near a location that an XTB-IIR could be used. That would be another way to go. Mine blasts over 10 volts of X10 signals on both phases of my home. At the present time. I am not using the TW523 port emulator on the XTB-IIR.
Now that it was pointed out. I may replace my RR501 with a V572A near my XTB-IIR.

It's true - I'm smarter than I look!  A few years ago when my original TW523 failed - I "discovered" the XTB IIR had a compatible port.  Smartest thing I ever did.  The V572 provides terrific range.  Not only are my RF-to-PLC commands BLASTED onto my system without fail thru that port (I've doubled my use of motion detectors) - but every flakey problem I had with my software based X10 PLC was magically resolved because of the power of Jeff's repeater.
